What is a Parish Nurse?
Faith Community Nursing (or Parish Nursing, Congregational Nursing) is the intentional integration of the practice of faith with the practice of nursing so people can achieve wholeness in, with and through the faith community. Faith Community Nurses are health advocates. They educate and motivate people to take positive action regarding wellness, prevention, and appropriate treatment of illness. They integrate social and spiritual connections with God, one another, and community.
Faith Community Nursing is recognized as a specialty practice by the American Nurses Association. Faith Community Nurses are spiritually mature registered nurses who volunteer or are hired within a congregation. Their work, flowing from the mission and vision of the congregation, supports the ongoing transformation of the faith community into a source of health and healing. Faith Community Nurses strive to promote healthy lifestyles for all ages, advocate for excellent care of the sick, and encourage healthcare justice. They recognize spiritual health is at the core of a person’s well-being and offer a sense of hope for individuals with a disease, being aware that healing can happen without cure.

A little bit about me.....
My name is Janine Yates.. I have been a Registered Nurse since 1974. My nursing experience includes critical care nursing, internal medicine, cardiology and family medicine clinic, hospice, home health as well as Parish Nursing. I attended 3 educational trainings to prepare me to become a Parish Nurse. I first attended a course through Alegent for Health Ministry, second attended a Parish Nurse training at St Elizabeth's in Lincoln and third I attended a Health Ministry training in DesMoines, IA. I also have one unit of clinical pastoral education. I helped establish Parish Nurisng/Health Ministry in at Faith Presbyterian church many years ago. I was blessed to serve as Faith Parish Nurse for a number of years until it was necessary for me to return to work full-time. I had hoped to be able to do both working full-time and Parish Nursing but it did not work out. Debbie Westerfield joined our church and our then pastor Dr. Mark Miller asked her to step into this position. I have always had a special place in my heart for Parish Nursing so I shared with Debbie that I would love to help in anyway if she needed it. One day I received an e-mail asking if I was still interested.. I got so excited as I have been praying for years to find away back into Parish Nursing. I felt very strongly that God was calling me home. My heart jumped and I had pure joy. At this time I was working full-time so I knew it would require me making a change. If God calls he equips. It is by faith that I know this is what God wants so he will provide.
I look forward to serving this congregation in mind, body, and spirit.
A little about me personally...
I am divorced. I have 3 children and 3 grand-daughters. I have lived in Papillion since 1989. I am a longstanding member of Faith Presbyterian church.. My hobby is making greeting cards when I have time. I have two wonderful dachsund puppies named Cowboy and Lucy.
As a Parish nurse I look forward to incorporating mind , body , and spirit to assist members of this congregation and community to heal and maintain overall health.
